Statement of Editorial Procedures

The copy-text is Wallace 1976 (=A), an audiotaped recording of the speech. The speech was recorded live by J. Michael Hogan and transcribed by Lubov M. Zeifman and Sara Ann Mehltretter of The Pennsylvania State University. The authentication process involved Zeifman and Mehltretter separately transcribing the speech verbatim from the audio recording, then comparing their two versions and repeatedly returning to the audio tape to reconcile differences. Grammatical errors, mispronunciations, and repetitions were preserved intact as much as possible to maintain the original stylistic character of the speech and the speaker. Audience responses (applause, etc.) were also recorded in brackets. Words or names that could not be definitively identified due to noise or other imperfections in the recording are noted with bracketed question marks and/or footnotes. No other transcript of the speech is known to exist.

Paragraphs have been created and numbered in the transcript in square brackets.

The text of this edition has been thoroughly checked and proofread by Zeifman, Mehltretter, and Hogan.

All double quotation marks are rendered with “.

This copy-text is not subject to end-of-line hyphenation.
