With the exception of vocal emphasis, no attempt has been made to represent
audio-visual characteristics of the principal source (or copy-text) of this
edition, namely Quayle 1992a [= A].

The copy-text is Quayle 1992a [= A], an audio recording of the delivered speech. This selection was based upon the plausible efficacy of the delivered speech and the relatively large number of viewers of the speech both on the radio, in television clips, and subsequently in various venues. Except where specified in notes, Quayle 1992a [= A] is followed for audience interruptions.

Quayle 1992b [= B] is followed for spelling, punctuation, and paragraphing. Vocal disfluencies have been corrected without comment.

The text of this edition has been thoroughly checked and proofread. The text does not depart from the copy-text or general editorial principles.

42 In the Content of Our Character, Shelby Steele wrote: “The responsible person knows that the quality of his life is something that he will have to make inside the limits of his fate. Some of these limits he can push back, some he cannot, but in any case the quality of his life will pretty much reflect the quality of his efforts” (p.33). Quayle misspoke Steele’s quotation in A. The copy text (A) includes Quayle’s statement as he spoke it, following B for capitalization and punctuation, including the insertion of ellipses.
