The copy text is from Everett 1864. The criterion for this selection is that this version of the text is the most widely circulated and cited version of the speech. The version of the speech in Everett’s Address of Hon. Edward Everett was prepared by Everett at the request of the Gettysburg Dedication organizer David Wills. This copy served as the version he authorized for printing and distribution. As such, it is the edition of the speech most scholars consult. A delivery text does not exist, as Everett delivered the speech mostly from memory. All spellings have been kept in their original form. Some punctuation has been changed and is noted within brackets [].

The text of this edition has been thoroughly checked and proofread. All double quotations are rendered with “, all single quotations with an apostrophe ‘. This copy-text is not subject to end-of-line hyphenation. Paragraph numbers have been added in square brackets.

Standard date values are given in ISO form: yyyy-mm-dd.

Characteristics of interpretation of this edition are as follows:
Proper names are not marked.
Dates are not marked.
Emphasis is marked without interpretation.

Departures from the copy-text and general editorial procedures:
Two footnotes appeared in the printed version of Everett’s speech, one at the end of paragraph 23 and one at the end of 27. Those notes have been excluded, as the tone of these notes evinces a written and not oral convention.
