The copy-text is Beveridge 1898 [=A], the unabridged speech published the day following Beveridge’s address in a popular Indiana newspaper (Indianapolis Journal), especially among Republicans. Beveridge’s own scrapbook of his political career uses this version (held in the DePauw University archives, DC2129) to record the address. Also, this version would have enjoyed the widest circulation immediately following the address. Beveridge 1902 [=B] is used to verify the Indianapolis Journal version [A]. Text [B] corrects a typographical or grammatical errors. The original punctuation, paragraphing, and capitalization have been maintained from text (A).
The text of this edition has been thoroughly checked and proofread. All double quotations are rendered with “, all single quotations with an apostrophe ‘. This copy-text is not subject to end-of-line hyphenation. Paragraph numbers have been added in square brackets.
